A practical approach to perform Technical assessment for SAP Upgrade  project      

Technical assessment is the first step for any SAP Upgrade project. Initially I struggled a bit to gather all the required information in structured format as I did not get any suitable template on internet and SDN site. Finally I have decided to prepare a generic template for any upgrade project so that I can use for any client / company.  Being a SAP Basis upgrade consultant / architect, what is the most important information I need for my upgrade project, so that it will help me to smoothly execute and deliver the project on time and can cover most of the unknown(s). From my personal experience, a technical upgrade assessment is a combined effort of SAP Basis, DBA, infrastructure and functional team, primarily driven by Basis upgrade consultant or designated project manager. Since this is a technical assessment, I will not cover any functional specifications or information about affected customized programs and changes. The main focus of technical assessment is to collect information about source landscape , interfaces and target landscape  - what is going to be changed and what are  interdependencies. Finally, what tool you will use and how you will translate or implement these changes and resolve all interdependencies. A lot of upgrade projects need to perform both upgrade and Unicode migration; formally we called CU&UC (combine upgrade and Unicode conversion). So I will cover some of the critical assessment points of Unicode migration too.

A assessment report varies from company to company – it may be  a simple page , two-page-document or a comprehensive report with detail technical specifications. I have prepared the following checklist as the starting point for any SAP upgrade project as a template for technical assessment. Once again this is not for functional upgrade or functional assessment – hence this will help SAP Basis folks only.

·         Based on changes – it may trigger another SAP product to change. For example,  if you like to upgrade to ECC 6.0 with EHP6 and you have CRM 4.0 system, there is a strong possibility that you have to upgrade your CRM system too. So gather information about all changes.

 

Another example is : if you upgrade your CRM system to CRM 7.0 EHP2 and your connected backend system is ECC 6.0  with EHP3, you need to apply patches for PI_Basis on your ECC system for interoperability.

 

·         Apply patch for Solution Manager ( for example to generate EHP6 stack xml you need to have minimum SPS23 for Solution Manager ).

 

 

 

·         Does it require more memory and CPU to cover your downtime?

 

·         In certain upgrade scenario, you have to upgrade OS or DB or both before upgrade ( verify with PAM)

Information about Non-SAP interfaces :

Non SAP interfaces are more critical for Upgrade and Unicode conversion projects. Compatibility issue with upgraded SAP release is one of the major concerns. So important question will be whether existing third party software will run with upgraded SAP release or not ? Typical you need to gather info as follows :

 

Is there any third party software connected to SAP system ?

Is there any FTP / SFTP transfer to/from SAP system that require SSH key to exchange.

Being a SAP Basis consultant, in many projects we do not know why company has decided to upgrade this SAP release or what is the business justification of this upgrade project. However, it is important to know the driving force for this changes.

This is one of the critical information to plan for production cutover activity and you have to optimize downtime to fit into this time frame.

Use standard predefine configuration mode for all non-production systems and use customize mode where you can select number of Rtrans, number of R3load and number of batch processes.

Use SAPINST to perform Unicode export/import for all database less than 200 GB.

Use Migration Monitor to perform Unicode export/import for all database less than 1 TB and greater than 300 GB.

Use Distribution monitor to perform Unicode export/import for all database bigger than 1 TB.

Unicode / Non-unicode

 

For any CU&UC project, better to determine whether the existing non Unicode system is “single code page” or “MDMP” ? How many additional languages has been installed on the system.

Based on whether single code page or MDMP, Unicode migration time and effort as well as process will change.

 

Run the report RSCPINST or I18N to verify this settings

Also check SMLT.

Based on SAP product and upgrad release there will be number of changes to security and authorization area. Note down all major known changes.

Change management process

 

Is there any change management system in place ?  Change management process will play a vital role for project schedules and mile stone dates.

Company XXX is using “Remedy” change management system for any changes to OS level – including all Kernel parameters and file system adjustment. For all non-production system approval is require from SAP Basis Manager and Infrastructure manager.

 

For any database changes, raise a helpdesk ticket to DBA team.

This is one of the key questions – business team and development team is always interested. However there is no straight forward answer for this question – until and unless use some third party tools or perform the first upgrade on Sandbox system.

Conclusion : This is a generic template, all examples must be replace with your actual data. This technical assessment document is primarily developed to gather info related to ECC upgrade and upgrade of any component of NetWeaver stack like – BW, SRM, CRM, SCM and Enterprise Portal. It may work for other SAP products; so far I did not try for other SAP products, except Business Objects ( BOBJ 4.0) upgrade.


EHP5 to EHP7 Upgrade: Preprocessing error MAIN_SHDIMP/SUBMOD_SHDIMP/SHADOW_IMPORT_INC

I am performing an SAP update ECC6 EHP5 to EHP7 and I got stuck at Preprocessing phase with the following error:

Checks after phase MAIN_SHDIMP/SUBMOD_SHDIMP/SHADOW_IMPORT_INC were negative!

 

Last error code set: Detected 10 errors summarized in 'SHDALLIMP.ELG'<br/> Calling 'D:\SUM\abap\exe/tp' failed with return code 8, check D:\SUM\abap\log\SAPup.ECO for details

 

ERROR: Detected the following errors due to error summary in SHDALLIMP.ELG:

Before anything else, i would like to say that I'm a student very eager to learn and understand all that i can from SAP, but still a STUDENT, so please take it easy on me and i apologize in advance if i don't catch up so quickly,

 

My Questions are:

1. What are the hardware/software requirements or specifications for implementing Enhancement Pack 6 on an existing SAP ERP 6.0? any ideas on the cost?
2. Are the rumors about an SAP ERP 7.0 true? or is it a version 7.0 of SAP EHP?

Stuck at pre-processing stage for 4.7 to ECC6 Ehp6 upgrade

Hi Experts,

 

In the process of upgrading from 4.7 to ECC6 EHP6. The upgrade wasstopped at the pre processing stage with the error

 

MAIN_SHDPREPUT/SUBMOD_SHDALIASDEL/SCEXEC_DEL_ALI!

 

 

I upgraded & downgraded the the r3tans & tp versions but error remain
please find the attached log files

Experts,

 

It would be great if you can clear a confusion.

 

I would be upgrading R/3 4.7 to ECC 6.0 EHP 5. As per EHP 5 upgrade guide and note 1863907 (note suggests that SAPup needs to be used for release upgrade and SUM for updating or upgrading EHP levels) the tool that should be used is SAPup. However I read that SUM can be used to upgrade R/3 4.7 to ECC 6.0 EHP 6.

 

Please throw light on my below doubts -

 

- Is SUM tool only used when EHP 6 comes into picture (like updating or upgrading to EHP 6)?

 

- Can SUM tool not be used to upgrade R/3 4.7 to ECC 6.0 EHP5 or any update or upgrade to EHP 5?

PSAPSR3702 not empty after ERP6 Ehp6 upgrade - 8 tables still in place

Hi,

 

after completing the ERP Ehp5 --> Ehp6 upgrade using the SUM tool I found that the old PSAPSR3702 tablespace still had 8 tables residing in it. These were :-

TTREE_FLNK

 

I have encountered a similar issue in the past when upgrading R/3 4.7 to ERP 6 Ehp5 where some tables were left in the PSAPSR3620 tablespace post upgrade. OSS 674070 was actioned in this case to resolve.

 

This note however is specific to upgrades from the r/3 4.7 release and does not seem to work in my case where the upgrade source release was ERP6 EHp5.

 

Has anyone seen anything similar with their upgrade process to Ehp6 from Ehp5.

 

I'm thinking about using brtools to reorg these tables into the PSAPSR3731 tablespace which will then leave the PSAPSR3702 tablespace empty and it can then be dropped as per upgrade guide.

 

brspace -p init<SID>.sap -s 20 -l E -f tbreorg -a reorg -mode online -s PSAPSR3702 -o SAPSR3 -t TTREED -n PSAPSR3731

 

Before I do this it'd like to check if anyone else has encountered the same issue with tables left in PSAPSR3702 post upgrade and if my solution is the preferred way to correct.

MAIN_INIT/CHECKCDMOUNTS: Export DVD for product ERP

Hi guys,

 

Current action:

Upgrade from SAP R/3 4.6C to SAP ERP 6.0 EhP4 / NW 7.01

 

Upgrade is stopped at MAIN_INIT/CHECKCDMOUNTS asking for:

«Enter at least the mount point for the DVD titled "Export DVD for product ERP"»

 

We've provided the requested media:

LABEL.ASC

and

We get the following error:

 

The requested Data Carrier is not mounted on any of the mount points you entered.

Please enter mount points for the DVDs required for the upgrade.

Error at MAIN_UPTRANS/STARTSAP_PUPG

Hello,

 

at implementing EHP 6 SUM fails in PHASE MAIN_UPTRANS/STARTSAP_PUPG.

 

At PHASES.LOG I get the following error:

1 ETQ399 SYSTEM MANAGER: Contents of instance list. Instance Number: 00.

1EETQ399 SYSTEM MANAGER: Instance Q61 00 not found

2EETQ354 Starting system failed, rc="-1"

 

The strange effect is, that the SAP System is startet. The service SAPSTARTSRV is running. I have stopped the system several times with the following comands:

- sapcontrol -nr 00 -function StopWait 300 10

- SAPup stoporig

- stopsap R3

 

Then I have stopped SAPSTARTSRV, SAPCCM4X and SUM

After this I did a "cleanipc all remove"

Then I have started the system an SUM again and got the same error.

 

I found several notes where the SAP did not start but no one where the system runs but the error occurs.

 

I found following strange behavior:

hges2100:q61adm 24% /saptmp/SUM/abap/bin/SAPup rootdir=/saptmp/SUM/abap stoporig

Waiting 20 seconds for proper system stop...

hges2100:q61adm 25% /saptmp/SUM/abap/bin/SAPup rootdir=/saptmp/SUM/abap checksysstatus

ERROR: Original system should be up, but appears to be down!

Starting service ...

Original system is down.

 

I can logon to the system now!

 

Does anyone know this behaviours?

How does the "SAPup checksysstatus" get the information if the system is running?

issue after upgrade EHP7

Hi

 

we finished upgrade ECC6 EHP5 to EHP7 ( OS : windows 2008 R2 / DB : SQL 2008 R2 ) on DEV /QAS systems There are some problems such as :

 

 

1 - The appearance of Overlap in some screens . despite the presence of these screens a good on the client 000 .

Posting Goods issue in different UOM than Delivery

I want to post goods issue which will be in different UOM than delivery through BAPI/FM.

 

Any Function module or BAPi will be helpful with the list of parameter to be passed.

I tried using ws_delivery_update with quantity passed in BASE UOM(Different than Sales UOM on delivery/Order) , but it always post material document(Godds issue) in sales UOM.

 

Is there some customizing which controls UOM on material document ?

Or i am missing something here  ?

Please suggest something.

4.6C Upgrade to ECC 6.00 EHP6 (CU&UC)

Hi all,

 

we are planing to Upgrade our SAP System.

 

Now we are on Windows Server 2003 x86, MaxDB 7.7 and non Unicode.

 

I´ve read the Upgrade Guides and CU&UC Guides.

 

But some Questions are left:

 

When i upgrade to EHP6, wich Netweaver Version is it? (7.02 or 7.31)?

 

And wich Tool should i take? In the (CU&UC) Guides is it SapUp. Or should i take the SUM?

 

I found the Upgrade Master from 4.6C to ECC 6.00 and also the Upgrade Export. But only without EHP.

 

I´ve read that i can go directly from 4.6C to ERP 6.00 with EHP6. Is that correct?

 

If it is possible to upgrade directly, where can i find the Upgrade Export to EHP6?

 

Can i use the normal EHP6 Export (for a new SAP Installation) from the Download Center for the Upgrade?

 

And at the end we want to move from MaxDB to Sybase ASE.

 

So in short:

 

From SAP 4.6C non Unicode to ECC 6.00 EHP6 Unicode.

 

Please provide me the best Solution.

SP stack implementation with SUM: incorrect detection of the system technology

Hello,

 

I would like to implement support package stack 24 (10/2013) with SUM on a SAP ECC 6.0 ABAP system, but when I start the SUM tool,

on the bottom of the first screen, in the "Detected SAP NetWeaver system" section the "System Technology" is "Dual Stack system" .

 

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the history of the instance, I only noticed that this was a dual stack system in the past,

in the meantime the Java part was incompletely uninstalled and now only the ABAP instance and the Central Services instance

(Message Server + Enqueue Server) are up and running.

 

My question is, is there a way to make an adjustment in the configuration of SUM to display the correct system technology

(Single Stack ABAP system) without doing the "cleanup" after the incomplete unistallation of the Java part?

Hi all,

 

During Upgrade in CONFIGURATION PHASE when we select

 

> MANUAL SELECTION OF PARAMETERS & provide values R3load is by default 3

 

I am pretty confused where R3load is used in Upgrade process

 

Why is R3load not mentioned in the Upgrade Guide if it is effectively used

 

SAP ERP 6.0 Including Enhancement Package 4 Support Release 1 ABAP

Based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Including Enhancement Package 1

R/3 4.6 C to ECC 6.0 Upgrade

We are currently running R/3 4.6C on AIX with Oracle 9i. We have to upgrade to ECC 6.0 and migrate to SQL Server / Windows eventually.

 

we are planning to Upgrade the DB to 10G, Unicode conversion and upgrade to ECC  and finally migrate to SQL Server, Windows. Can you comment on this strategy?

 

Anybody suggests the Pre-Reqs needed for DB and/or SAP support packs to Upgrade and Unicode Conversion?

 

Please share any OSS notes/ documentation regarding Pre-reqs.

1EED: DD sources table “xxx” could not be read.

Runtime object for "TABINCSTR" could not be generated. Tabletype UMGTTABNM: Linetype UMGSTABNM does not exist. Nametab not created.

Solution: You can ignore such error messages for the following obsolete tables:

TABINCSTR, H_DC1RULES, DHISTSTR, BDLYTCC, UMGTTABNM, UMGTCPFLD, UMGTCHKP"

 

 

Please guide me more for the specified issue.
