We are upgrading a bolt-on in ECC which would change the length of existing fields in an append structure in cluster table KONV. Since this is a huge table, in order to reduce the system downtime during upgrade we want to use ICNV to pre-convert KONV. I followed the following steps
1. Edit KONV in target system, manually change KONV fields append structures via SE11 and keep them inactive
2. Start ICNV process Steps 1 through 4
3. Activate the inactive Append
4. Ideally this step should be import the upgrade TRs to change the table (and the table would not undergo any conversion since table structures are the same).
After I activate the append it gives a return code 8 and still asks the table to be converted via SE14 (even though ICNV has finished).
Does anybody have experience with this type of adhoc conversion process ?
